Run X Applications Over Network Using SSH

Topology:
Linux-based PC: 192.168.1.1
Linux-based Laptop: 192.168.1.7

In PC, you edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config using any editor you like:
$ sudo vi /etc/ssh/sshd
Looking for this line, or you can add if it's not already there:
X11Forwarding     yes
Save that file and restart SSH service:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart
Allow Laptop to run X applications:
$ xhost 192.168.1.7
Define default display:
$ export DISPLAY=192.168.1.1:0

Then from Laptop terminal, run the command to execute any X applications you like:
$ ssh -X [username]@192.168.1.1 firefox
$ ssh -X [username]@192.168.1.1 oowriter

That's it! :)

Running UbuntuChroot on #webOS

Recently I just managed partitioning my Pre to make it possible running UbuntuChroot in it. Yes, you've got it right, UbuntuChroot running on my Pre. You can see here for the Wiki. The hard thing is the first part, because you have to Meta-Doctor-ing your Pre, so it will have separate ext3fs partition. I'm Doctor-ing using webOS 2.1.0, and skip the "git" part, you have to search for it in the internet.

1. Here's the command I used:
$ make DEVICE=preplus CARRIER=wr VERSION=2.1.0 ENABLE_DEVELOPER_MODE=1 DISABLE_UPLOAD_DAEMON=1 DISABLE_UPDATE_DAEMON=1 CUSTOM_MODEL_LIST=P100UEU CUSTOM_BOOTLOGO=scripts/WebOS-Internals.tga EXT3FS_PARTITION_SIZE=2GB clobber all
2. After it done, run the installation process. And continue with configuration to automounting ext3fs partition at device boot.
3. Using Preware, activate the testing feed, then installing Xcecutah, Xserver and UbuntuChroot 11.04
4. Launch Excecutah to run Xserver and UbuntuChroot 11.04, here's what I've got:

5. You can use usual Ubuntu apt-get command to update repository and installing packages. And you can also use apt-cache search to look for certain packages that works on ARM processor.
6. This is the screenshot of htop running on my Pre:

Running Winbox in Snow Leopard

My everyday work are sometime using winbox to configure and manage routerboard device which running MikroTik OS, while using MacBook Pro, I need to prepare the environment since winbox are meant to be run on Windows environment. I can use either Darwine or wine package from macports, and I chose to use macports, since I'm more used to CLI environment.

All you need to do is:
1. choose the package according to Mac OS X version, download and install from here
2. for snow leopard (64-bit), you should install wine-devel instead of wine package, and add +universal
#  sudo port -v install wine-devel +universal

3. then you should be able to run winbox.exe from terminal
# /opt/local/bin/wine winbox.exe

4. you can also download this package, put it in your Applications and just double-click to run it

For complete references on other Mac OS X version, see here
